Ocracoke

It was a shame that we left the canal without catching any crab. Well, one can not have everything in life.

We had motored with sail on all day long and realized we could not reach Ocracoke. We decided that we would anchor anyplace with any protection before dark. We anchored at Winsock Bay where there was nothing around it thus the cellphone did not work because of no signal.

The next morning we headed for the Ocracoke Island. We sailed silently off the anchor and sighted six dolphins swimming with us they stayed with us for about 30 minutes.

Ocracoke island is famous for its natural beauty and number one beach in USA.

Since the pirate festival is the Halloween day we decided to stay two nights to see the reenactment of the capture of Black Beard in the harbor.

Meanwhile Lee had a terrible Compost Toilet accident! I messed the toilet and I did not know what to do so just wait for Peter. Peter had gone to the hardware store for a shackle. When he came back he cleaned the Compost Toilet and I was immensely grateful for that. I suggested that I will do anything and do whatever he likes to do today.

Ocracoke was the hide out of Pirates and Black Beard was captured here. We were docked in the center of the action.

His treasure is rumored to be hidden on the Island. As it is a Federal National Park digging is forbidden. We will have to fund our trip another way 😦

A Royal Navy boat was sunk protecting the Island in WW2 and four recovered bodies are buried in the British Cemetry. Custom has it that British sailors must be buried on British soil do the Cemetry is designated as British Land. Saves travelling accros the Atlantic to be in Britain πŸ™‚

  1. Lee and Pete: Carol and I are following your trip with fascination! Too bad about the crabs … but, then again, you wouldn’t expect me to feel too sorry for you!
I never knew that about British sailors having to be buried in British land. Now, like you, I can just visit that cemetery whenever I’m missing England!

Looking forward to many, many stories from you.

  2. Your trip sounds very exciting! Thank you for sharing with us. If on your travels, there should be an exhibit of Archibald Motley, I highly recommend it! Hopefully this will post. Alan is unable to send posts.

  3. Found out the link is through my work email – not personal. Anyhow, Liisa & I are also quite enjoying the posts and the pictures and stories. You should have heard Brett of Oracle speaking at the latest conference call: ” Many of you have known Peter Dempsey of Con Ed who is yet another original who has now sailed off into the sunset!” I wonder if he knew how true his “analogy” was?
