Painting in Luperon

We rented a room with Airconditioning as a painting studio. Luperon got full time electricity only six months ago, before that it was 8 hours per day. There are not many places with airconditioning. Yet I can not paint without airconditioning so we rented a room in a hotel for two months. The weather is so hot, we sweat like a dog everyday unless the trade winds are blowing then it is quite comfortable but I don’t like the wind when painting.

We are staying in Luperon for most of the hurricane season until beginning of September. Luperon is the safest harbour against the hurricane in Carribean. Sea Squirrel left to Samana and on to Puerto Rico directly. They are meeting their two daughters and spend some time in British Virgin Island and then come back to Puerto Rico.

I have been painting from 7:00 am to 5:00 pm. I finished two unfinished paintings nicely. There was some problem with electricity since yesterday in our street, I took some time off until it was repaired. They hoisted a new transformer, Peter said it was just like being back at ConEd!

We went to Santiago city. There is a monument on top of the hill. The Museum has Festival Masks and Costumes. This nice building is the Merengue Museum.

Peter bought some wood to repair some cabinet work on the boat. The wood yard only had rough cuts and they cut to size and finish in the yard. He bought two 6ft by 6 inch by 1 inch planks of mahogany for $20. They were cut to 1/2 thickness and finished. Four large planks of mahogany for 800 pesos, about $20. He was happy!

Dominican Republic has so many mountains and the scenery is very peaceful with Farms and Animals. The fruits which you buy in the countryside, are very ripe, sweet and tasteful.

We found out that Motorcycles with driver are waiting on a certain street corner just like the Taxi stand. We got a ride to the Restaurant on the beach for one dollar. Peter and I had a Motocycle each. It is our favorite restaurant in the cool ocean breezes and the Fish and Octopus are very good. The Dominican people are enjoying this public beach here.

We have been studying very hard to learn Spanish. We have a class every day and learn the vocabulary and verb conjugation. And go into town, we practice Spanish with people.
