La Tormenta “Matthew”

The Hurricane Matthew is leaving. We have been watching the storm carefully. The school is closed today and tomorrow due to the predicted heavy rain from Matthew. As soon as Matthew leaves we are planning to go to Pico Duarte. We are riding to the mountains by motorbike and it is two days hiking up and one day down the mountain to go to the peak. I am definitely riding a Mule part way.

It is a birthday party of three boaters. We had Barbeque pork  Dominican style and foods from the volunteers.

Happy birthday

The storm is gone, we had less rain and wind than normal! Very calm. The wind from the storm was from the south and the Island absorbed it, we normally get strong Trades from the east but they were deflected by the storm so we had less wind than normal. Santo Domingo and the south coast got hit badly. Thank you for those who worried and sent an email.

Quite and calm during the storm.

The motorbike ride to Pico Duarte was long but the part of the mountains road was beautiful. The boaters said that you will have great time but Dominicans said the road is too dangerous. It was not dangerous at all! You should have seen the face of the Hotel Owner and the cleaning lady to hear about our trip.

Peter was fascinated to see the water running down as a drain pipe.

Cascading drain pipe.

The California Hotel has a great garden and swimming pool. When we are about to go for a walk it was pouring down so we sat in the Gazebo to watch the rain. It was also really nice to enjoy the entire garden in the rain. The temperature has dropped much compared to Luperon and it is very pleasant in the mountain.

Relaxing by the pool.

The trees and the vegetations change in the mountain. The pines of the Pine Tree has an eccentric form and color. It has a leathery look with shiny and fat looking oily skin. It looks like an artificial Christmas tree.

  1. We had been thinking about you as that storm developed and passed to the south of you, before it had even been named “Matthew”. It gave us quite a scare, too, passing within 100 miles of Hollywood but didn’t make landfall till much further north. We’ve enjoyed reading about your adventures in the DR!

    ¡Ultreia!
